For my Writing For Publication class, students were asked to write either a short story, a personal essay or an informational how-to. While I originally wanted to write a short story, I was oblivious as to what I would write about. I’ve written short stories before, but it’s been such a long time since I have; so that idea went flying out of the window. I then came to the conclusion that I would do a personal essay instead. I knew from the jump that I didn’t really want to write about personal family events or anything of that matter, so I was clueless about what I would write about in this personal essay as well. Then, it hit me! I could write about my love for music! ❤ I mean, after all, music is something that is personal and dear to me, music plays a major role in my life – so why not? Now, this here below is just a draft, so bare with me and feel free to let me know what you think!
My Love For Music
Everyone has that one dear friend that they can always count on to be there for them whenever they call, right? I know I do. This special friend has literally been with me through the good times and the bad. No matter what kind of mood I may be in, I don’t even have to explain why I feel the way that I do, because my friend already understands. If not anyone else, then rest assured that this is the only friend that can relate to me 100% and vice versa. I can come bearing nothing but tears and sure enough, I’m sure to leave in much higher spirits than I arrived. Who is this dear friend that I speak so highly of? Why Music, of course.
Now, while I don’t remember exactly when I became such a big advocate for music, I do know that I was rather young. Just the feeling that I got when I would hear it would cause me to smile broader than anything else had and I just yearned to hear it. It seemed as if there was always a song to match my mood at the time; and to this day, it’s still like that.
At times I listen to songs and think, “Wow, it’s crazy how a song can express exactly what I’m going through right now,” and then I go, “Well, these music artists are human just like I am. Of course I’m not the only one who has felt this exact way.”
Outside of listening to music, I eventually realized that I wanted to try my hand at writing music as well. Music takes me to a place unknown and it always gives me an indescribable feeling. I figured that that I wanted to begin writing music to see if I could give people the same indescribable feeling that music gives me.
In a way, music is all I know. Some days, music is all that I need to get me through the day. Some days, I don’t want to do anything except lie down and listen to my music.
Music is the air that I breathe, the food that I eat, music is the blood that keeps my heart pumping. Music opens my eyes and changes my perspective on life in ways that many other things have been unsuccessful at doing so.
You know how some people say that the reason that they got involved in extra-curricular activities was so they would have something to keep themselves out of trouble as a kid? Well, music has been my extra-curricular activity my whole LIFE. Now, that’s not to say that had music not been such a major part of my life, I’d be this rebellious menace to society, running the streets and such; but I will say that music has motivated me to continuously push toward my goals and dreams.
